The story behind the name

A mature apple tree can produce up to 500 pounds of fruit each year and live for 100 years. It can provide food for generation after generation. To reach its potential, the tree can’t be neglected along the way. It starts with a tiny seed weighing just half a gram. Young seedlings need protection from browsing animals. The soil must be watered and fertilized to create deep roots that provide nutrients and a strong anchor against the wind. Branches must be pruned and thinned to allow the fruits to reach their maximum potential. It takes time, patience, maintenance and care.

The reward is a bounty of fruit that not only provides food for today, but produces seeds that can create new trees and continue a legacy for generations to come.

Johnny Appleseed

Northeast Indiana is the final resting place of one of the famous characters in American folklore. John Chapman, commonly known as Johnny Appleseed, spent most of life wandering the 19th century wilderness of Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. Though often depicted as a poor, uneducated drifter with no home, threadbare clothing and no assets to his name, Chapman was actually an astute businessman who owned 1,200 acres of land at the time of his passing.

Johnny understood the dynamics of the period he lived in. He knew that settlers heading west on the American frontier would need apple trees on their land to provide fruit for cider, the most common drink of the day. Chapman moved west and bought land and planted his apple trees in advance of the settler’s arrival. When they arrived, he sold them the land with the apple trees already established and producing fruit for the essential cider. Not only was Chapman an accomplished businessman, he was a man of the highest moral character.

Chapman was a peace loving individual who was reputed to have a deep respect for nature and his fellow man. He sought no recognition for his deeds, save for the satisfaction of providing something essential to the way of life at the time.
